From surviving the foster care system to earning a Purple Heart as a U.S. Navy veteran, Phoenix resident Dr. Kevin “Doc” Ivory has spent a lifetime turning personal adversity into purpose. Today, as a high school teacher, youth basketball coach, author, and doctoral scholar in psychology, Doc is applying those hard-earned lessons to transform outcomes for young people across the country.

Through his Phoenix-based nonprofit, The Ivory Strong Foundation, Doc and his young son, Ikaika, personally deliver children’s books, sports equipment, and hands-on mentorship to local schools, libraries, and youth programs. His work goes beyond simple resource donations—it is centered on giving students the tools to cultivate self-identity, emotional regulation, and lifelong confidence.

Refining Adversity into Advocacy

Doc’s early life was marked by challenges that often derail young lives. Raised within the foster care system, he learned early on how critical self-reliance, emotional awareness, and strong guidance are for survival. That resilience carried him into the U.S. Navy, where his brave service as a medical corpsman earned him the Purple Heart during combat operations.

Following his military service, Doc turned toward education and psychology, pursuing advanced degrees to better understand youth development and trauma-informed mentorship.

"Everything I experienced—from foster care to the military—taught me that resilience isn't something you're born with; it's something built through guidance, discipline, and seeing your own worth," Doc shared.

The Ivory Strong Foundation: Literacy Meets Emotional Intelligence

Recognizing gaps in traditional school curricula, Doc launched The Ivory Strong Foundation to deliver author-led educational initiatives directly into classrooms. Rather than dropping off books and leaving, Doc visits schools to read with students, leading interactive discussions about big life concepts in accessible ways.

His children's book series addresses vital pillars often missing from early learning:

• Black History & Representation: Offering young readers opportunities to see historical figures and diverse characters reflected in the books they hold.

• Emotional Regulation & Self-Awareness: Equipping children with coping skills to identify feelings, manage anxiety, and navigate interpersonal conflicts.

• Financial Literacy: Introducing foundational money concepts early to break cycles of generational poverty.

• Youth Fitness & Discipline: Connecting physical wellbeing with mental focus, leadership, and emotional grit.

Equipping Kids to See Their Own Worth

For Doc Ivory, representation in children's literature is a crucial key to unlocking a child's imagination and self-belief. When children see leaders, scholars, and heroes who look like them, their horizon of possibility expands dramatically.

By combining literacy initiatives with athletic coaching and psychological principles, Doc is helping young people build a well-rounded foundation for adulthood.

"When kids know who they are, understand how to manage their emotions, and have basic financial and physical discipline, they become unstoppable," Doc noted during the interview. "We want our students to realize that they don't have to wait for someone else to validate them—they carry inherent value right now."
